Can market forces rescue global forest governance?

Despite global consensus to enhance the livelihoods of forest dependent peoples, promote environmentally sensitive forest practices and foster sustainable economic activity, significant frustration exists at the pace and scale of change “on the ground”.

Deforestation, forest degradation, increasing poverty and inequality remain a serious concern and sustainable management of forests is challenged by swift “land grabs” that disrupt communities and blindly promote forestry and resource stewardship. How might the next generation of international and multilevel deliberations move from consensus about what to do, to understanding how such results might be achieved?

The talk will assess the potential pitfalls and strategies for increasing the use of market mechanisms, focusing on the related cases of forest certification systems.

Cashore argues that stakeholders and government officials must place greater attention not only on the “direct” effects of market mechanisms, but on their synergistic potential to interact with government efforts across multiple scales.
