Do you want to apply your statistics and economics skills on solving industry problems while writing a master’s thesis? Then apply for a master’s thesis student position in the Pricing Data Science team at Maersk. Here, we work every day to develop and implement data driven algorithms to optimize and automate pricing decisions in the second largest ocean container carrier in the world. We have lots of ideas and data. We need you to come and challenge us and yourself!

We offer

1-2 master thesis spots for economics master students in the fall of 2024. 

  • Get a place to work in an intellectually challenging workplace during your thesis process. We are a team of data scientists, data and software engineers with both computer science, engineering and economics backgrounds. 
  • The possibility of giving one or two status presentations during your process for our team to get feedback. 
  • Access to internal data on e.g. network capacity, bookings, website search traffic and much more

You will be supervised by Anders Munk Nielsen (Department of Economics, UCPH) and Frederik Plum Hauschultz (Data Scientist, PhD at Maersk).

Project Description

The precise project will be defined in collaboration between the student and the supervisors, but here are some ideas to spur your curiosity 

  • Estimation of a container freight demand model perhaps focusing on a specific dimension of substitution, e.g. across ports (spatial), departures (time) or products (spot vs. fixed price contracts) or on customer segmentation
  • Estimation of optimal pricing policies using e.g. reinforcement learning methods
  • Optimal cancellation fee policies
  • Optimal pricing of a fixed term contracts
